Thanksgiving is just around the corner and that means that the fall travel season is underway. During Thanksgiving week, there are more cars on the road than any other time of year, so if you’re planning on a trip to visit family or friends, now is the time to get the process started.

To help you with that process, we’ve compiled some tips and advice that will help you make the best of your Thanksgiving road trip.

Tip #1: Make Sure Your Doggo Is Ok To Travel

According to TopDogTips, the most important precaution to take when planning a road trip with your dog is to make sure they are up for the long journey. Senior dogs, puppies and doggos with disabilities and special needs should be cleared for travel by your veterinarian.

Tip #2: Get ID Tags & Microchips Updated

According to TopDogTips, the most important precaution to take when planning a road trip with your dog is to make sure they are up for the long journey. Senior dogs, puppies and doggos with disabilities and special needs should be cleared for travel by your veterinarian.

Tip #3: No Heads Out The Window

Trips With Pets reminds us that although most dogs love to stick their heads out open windows, the wind can seriously irritate mucous membranes and blow pieces of grit or other debris into their eyes.

Tip #4: Safety Inside The Vehicle

Properly restrain and contain your doggo inside the vehicle prior to your trip. Specially-designed pet seat belts, carriers and barriers are available for purchase to avoid the consequences due to distractions. Also, never allow your dog to sit on your lap while you drive per American Humane.

Tip #5: Make Frequent Pit Stops

Always take frequent bathroom and exercise breaks. Most travel service areas have designated areas for walking your pet, so be sure to stay in this area particularly when your doggo needs a potty break...and of course, bring along a bag to pick up after your pet.

These 5 tips will go a long way in helping you guarantee a safe and enjoyable road trip with your doggo, but don’t miss the next Wellness Wednesday email where we’ll continue Road Trippin’ With Doggo Part 2.
